George’s Close Shave on the Daily Politics Show BBC

Our dearly departed George (don’t worry he hasn’t died, he’s moved up to Leicester to open a night club) is always partial to an opinion – what barber isn’t?  Though it’s not always easy to express yourself when you’re on live TV and even harder when you’re confronted with world renowned politicians like Jack Straw and John Prescott.  That’s who George found himself conversing with in what proved to be an extremely surreal day off last Thursday!

On Wednesday 30th November Richard was approached by the BBC to see if Pall Mall Barbers would provide a barber to shave off the moustaches of Iain Murray of the Labour Party and Mike Crockart of the Lib Dem Party on live TV as their Movember efforts were now at an end.  It was a no brainer for Richard who instantly agreed, though being 30th all our attentions were on our own Movember Comedy Gala Show.  It was only later that Richard had to consider who the barber should be who would stand in front of a camera filming live to an audience in its millions.  The answer was of course George, but he was taking a well deserved day off.

On receiving the call from Richard, George dropped everything and headed into town, though with no time to prepare he arrived with an old, slightly faded work shirt.  With the BBC’s request to have a barber who “looked the part” Richard new George’s shirt just wouldn’t do.  Quickly Richard grabbed a brand new shirt from the storeroom, but as with all new shirts it needed ironing.  With the time ticking away George and Richard raced across the road to the hotel opposite desperate for use of an iron in one of the vacant rooms.  After necessary calls to duty managers the reception team at the front desk allowed the two desperate barbers use of a room where they could iron out the creases of the brand new shirt.  With the BBC calling in a panic to know where the promised barber was the last of the creases disappeared under the steam of the iron and George in “Chip N Dale” fashion stripped off his old shirt and donned the new.

Back outside George mounted his motorbike like a knight of old leaping onto his steed and bombed down the road and raced (whilst always remaining under the speed limit) to the studios at 4 Millbank SW1.

On arriving at the studio there was no time for detailed rehearsals so George was rushed through reception, security and onto the studio floor.  It was every bit akin to an Aaron Sorkin drama.  To say that George was slightly flustered would be an understatement, which was only compounded when he found himself 5 minutes from air conversing with a group of prominent politicians.  Never one to let an opportunity slip by George managed to get the last word in (no mean feet when you’re chilling out with John Prescott) – It was George’s suggestion that the politicians should continue their political chat at Pall Mall Barbers and provided them all with a business card.  It was a tongue and cheek joke that caught the other men off their guards and had them all laughing.  With that came the gut wrenching call for ‘places’ and then the famous countdown.

This Movember – look after man’s best friend – The Moustache

So you’ve decided to be a hero and donate your upper lip to charity this November. Good for you, welcome to our every increasing numbers of wonderful people! Donating your lip doesn’t however mean you have to look like a badly shaved hermit or a seedy man who hangs around fair grounds!

The moustache like all other types of facial hair requires grooming. Many men make the mistake of believing that a moustache is simple the lack of shaving your lip. It’s a common error, but an error nonetheless! Firstly it is important to understand that all hair, whether it is on your head, chest or face requires a clean healthy environment in which to grow. This means you need to continue to wash and treat that upper lip. Invest in a decent face wash and exfoliater. What’s that you don’t exfoliate? Well, you should probably about twice a week depending on your skin type. There are many high street brands which cater for men’s skin needs. Personally I’m using a facial scrub in the Botanics range from Boots. It’s a good brand without costing the earth and believe me if you have the earth to spend, you won’t have much change left when you spend it on top end skincare. You should also use a daily facial wash on that upper lip too. I have been asked before whether with facial hair to use shampoo, but the hair on your face is very different to the hair on top of your head and the focus here is on the skin underneath so stick with a decent non drying facial wash.

Right, now that we have taken care of the canvas for your facial hair art, let’s look at the “art” itself – the hair. As I’ve mentioned already, don’t think of this as simply not shaving. From very early on you should be trimming and styling that bush to help it accentuate your looks and style. A bushy and unmanageable tashe can give the wearer a rounded face and make the man look overweight. This is because it can start to obscure the cheekbones and mouth lines. Alternatively if the moustache is trimmed back, lifting it above the lip line and keeping it as simply a frame for the lips it allows you to keep the cheeks free and focuses the eyes towards your mouth. This is the primary purpose of the moustache and goatee.

Now for the fun part – how exactly you wear the moustache is entirely up to you. There are so many styles, from; the Handle Bar to Horseshoe, or the Walrus and even the Dali (named after Salvador). For the very adventurous why not try the “Fu Manchu” style. For help styling and maintaining your moustache I’d recommend a visit to your barber for a trim and consultation. Trust me it would be worth it, especially if you have grand plans for your tashe!

I once read a comedy T-shirt, it went as follows, “Guns don’t kill people – People with Moustaches kill People” – I blame this bad stigma entirely on badly groomed moustaches, that and evil dictators with moustaches (Hitler, Stalin, Genghis Khan etc). Let’s do our Tache heroes proud this November – let’s think of Hulk Hogan, Bruce Forsyth, David Niven and all though wonderful hairy lips.

If you’re looking for an event to go to on 30th November to show off your taches I’d like to recommend “The Paul, Mal, Barbara Comedy Gala Night” at the Arts Theatre in the West End! – Kick off is at 8pm – For more details and to book tickets click on the link!

Movember 2011 - It's Moustache Season!

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. Being a barber shop not only is men’s health a key interest for both us and our clientele but the subject of male grooming is the very heart stone of our world. It was therefore an obvious and simple decision to commit our charitable energies to Movember.

It was with much excitement that Richard, Daniel, Guy and Rich all headed off to funky Hoxton town for the grand launch of Movember 2011. Having sat down and had a number of meetings with Movember on how we can best help the cause we were touched to receive our tickets to the trendiest party in town! It was a truly classy night where we were wined and dined by the official sponsors of the charity – which included; HP Sauce, Snickers, Wilkinson Swords and others. All of our delegates got stuck in, Guy eyeing the free roast pork sandwiches, Daniel the free booze, Richard at every opportunity was clambering over the fake horse in the corner (we’re not entirely sure why there was a fake horse) and Rich was guilty throughout the evening for his wandering eyes. It is safe to say that “chic” and “glamorous” is how to define the crowd that night. In all seriousness though, it was great to meet seasoned Movember campaigners who have worked so hard on these very important issues and also to hear the stories from survivors of these cancers – survivors due to the fundraising and awareness raising of many of the people in the room that night.

All of the Pall Mall Barbers contingent that night came away focused and raring to get stuck into our Movember campaign plan – so here’s some of the things we’re doing!

The big, the hilarious, the absolutely rub your eyes to check you’re reading this correctly and not hallucinating – WEST END COMEDY GALA NIGHT starring PAUL, MAL and BARBARA! – This will be on 30th November at The Arts Theatre in the West End. The tickets range from £20-£37 Tickets ON SALE here!

Check out our Movember comedy clips on YouTube! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JvkTigzIRA&feature if it makes you laugh why not donate a little money remember it’s all for a good cause!

We will also be offering free moustache trims to all men raising money for Movember when they book in for a wash and cut during November and will also knock £5 off any wet shave option for fundraisers as well!

Go forth and propagate that upper lip!

FOUR

We at Pall Mall Barbers have all sorts of clientele from all warps of life.  It’s fantastic to have them enter our little world and tell us about their aims and ambitions.  Sometimes they succeed and sometimes they tell us they’re heading back to the drawing board.  It has given us great pleasure to witness the rise of one client who has been coming to us for years - Raiomond Mirza.  He’s a music composer in the film industry – I know – very cool!  On his last visit to the shop he told us of his latest project which not only involved his music skills but also saw him producing his first feature film!  It's called FOUR and it was released on Friday at Empire and Vue.  It looks brilliant and has a very impressive cast; Martin Compston (The Damned United), Craig Conway (Dog Soldiers), Sean Pertwee (Mutant Chronicles), Kierston Wareing (The Take).
Now I’m going to be honest – we haven’t seen it yet! But we’re so proud of Raiomond we are definitely going to take a little trip over the road to the cinema to check it out!  Here’s the trailer http://fourthefilm.com/ - pretty cool eh! And of course they’re on Facebook with loads of cool pics http://www.facebook.com/Fourthefilm. If you like what you see please hit the “Like” button.
Want to know what the professional critics think of the show? Well here you go;
"Enjoyably grim!"  - TIME OUT
"Smart taut and nasty…More twists than a bag of pretzels!" - TOTAL FILM
"Pressure-cooker stuff… Gleefully threatening." - RADIO TIMES

Now on another note – if you fancy a trip to the West End but you’re more of a light hearted ‘giggle-me-silly” kind of person, why not come see our very own barbershop comedy fundraising night!  It’s on 30th November and it’s raising money for the brilliant charity Movember.  It should be a great night with special guests such as Nina Conti and Ouse Valley Singles Club.  And of course our very own Paul Mal and Barbara in their latest comic catastrophe “A Royal Mess” www.artstheatrewestend.co.uk.  If you haven’t seen Paul Mal and Barbara yet here’s their YouTube channel www.youtube.com/PaulMalBarbara.
Hope to see you all soon – whether it’s in the cinema, West End Theatre or having a trim in one of our barber chairs!

The Allure of the Beard

You see and hear a lot when you stand behind a barber’s chair.  A lot of different people come in with a lot of different hair types and stories to tell, but of late I’ve noticed a paradox.  It’s one that affects our work directly, but is in no way negative.  Never before have our straight razor cuts been so popular.  As demand has grown, we’ve had to expand our qualified shaving staff and our range of in-store wet shaves.  Once upon a time a standard “Wet Shave” was all we offered; now we have, “The Traditional Wet Shave”, “The Luxury Wet Shave” and even “The D R Harris Wet Shave”.  The paradox is that never before has the Beard been so popular.  When I was a child few men seemed to have beards; my father was the exception.  Beards back then were to be found on sailors and wannabe wizards.  Now beards are chic – men of all ages, including those in their 20’s, are sporting beards.  If you doubt how fashionable beards are just take a look at FCUK’s advertising campaign (the good looking rugged guys with the big beards). I know my girlfriend follows the campaign closely and not for the clothes!

What you need to understand however about beards is that you wear them in the same way you wear clothes.  Your beard/facial hair needs to be groomed and fitted for your physique and style.  Allowing your beard to grow by simply not shaving is, I’m afraid, a mistake – a common one to be sure, but nevertheless a mistake.  After all your hair can grow from high on your cheek bones right down to your chest hair.  You might want the rugged look but I doubt you want the yeti look.  Hair on top of your head helps to frame the face; the beard does exactly the same lower down.  You need to consider what you are trying to achieve.  I myself wear a beard and I’ve experimented in lengths and shapes.  If I let it grow too long it “rounds” the face and makes me look like I’m carrying weight in my cheeks and neck.  Perversely if I keep it trim and close to the skin it hides what unwanted fat I have in these areas and helps me look trim.  Some simple shaping also helps give a smart, sharp look.  Shaving the beard on the neck to above the Adam’s Apple line will prevent you from looking like you’ve simply misplaced your razor and are in fact a well groomed, conscientious man.  I can’t tell you exactly where that trim line should be as it differs from one beard to the next.  I would strongly suggest getting your local barber to shape it for you and show you where best to trim from.  The same rule applies at the top of the beard.  I always bring my beard down under my cheekbones.  This is to allow the cheekbones to stand out and ensure that my face retains distinction and prevent that rounded look we need to avoid.  How far you bring the beard down depends purely on your taste.  Recently I’ve seen a number of very low cut beards consisting of barely more than sideburns attached to a goatee with a thin trail of beard along the jaw line.  Personally I’m more of the traditional type and keep the beard line running from the top of the ear to connect with the moustache.
In a nut shell there are no right or wrong ways to style your beard; it’s all down to taste, whether you’re of the Brad Pitt beard school or French rugby player Sebastian Chapel. But there is a right and wrong way to groom your beard.  Remember you wear your beard in full view of everyone around you. Who knows who you’ll be bumping into today, so make sure your beard enhances your look.  A beard is not just for lazy shavers.
