Pall Mall Barbers in the City of London

Our ever loyal customers have been asking us to open a Pall Mall Barbers in the City of London for a very L-O-N-G time.  Well, guess what?  We’re just about to.

Yep, that right, Pall Mall Barbers is opening a brand new salon to the City of London in the next few weeks, in the vicinity of Liverpool Street. With our usual old school barber shop styling – ceramic sinks, wood paneling and the traditional red and white barbers pole along with the witty barber shop banter and of course the modern razor sharp haircuts and wet shaves that we’re known for.  You’ll get all that and more at our barbers in the City of London.

The City of London is a magnet for smart, professional men who need to look sharp.  It instills confidence. And there really is no better place than a professional men’s barbershop to get all the advice and tips a man could want. You may want to know how to get the smoothest closest shave, a haircut that suits you/your hair/your job and is easy to manage even some general grooming advice?  When we open our barbers in Liverpool Street, you’ll be able to get all that from the best barbers in London (we may be a bit biased, but if you don’t believe us, see some of our credentials in another blog article we’ve written.)

Offering the full range of men’s hairdressing and barber services at the new barber shop in the City of London, you’ll be able to nip in during your lunchtime – although we would advise making an appointment to secure a set time, so perhaps on your way out after a long day in the office? Once we open and have updated the Pall Mall Barbers website, you’ll be able to book on line, but as soon as we open we’ll publicise the telephone number so you can always call us to book.barbers in the city of london

Don’t forget, in the next few weeks you’ll see our brand new barbers in the City of London, but until then, why not visit one of our other Central London barber shops – we’ve got salons in Trafalgar Square, Fitzrovia and Westminster where the full range of barbers and mens hairdressing services are offered, alongside quality men’s shaving and hair styling products.

We look forward to seeing you!

Best Barber in London

We know many claim to be the best barber in London, but who really holds that accolade?

Maybe we’re a little biased, but we’ve got lots of reasons to think we are in with a really good chance of claiming that title.. and it’s not just our egos talking.

So what would constitute being the best barber in London? Well, firstly, how about experience, knowledge and expertise?  At Pall Mall Barbers, we’ve definitely got those in bucketfuls.  With 3 barbershops in Central London – Westminster, Trafalgar Square and Fitzrovia, our barbers have over 300 years of collective barbering experience between them, in London, the UK and internationally. We’re often inundated with applicants from fellow barbers wanting the chance to come and work at Pall Mall Barbers, such is our reputation in the industry and amongst our peers.

It’s that reputation that leads to us often being asked for advice, tips or opinions from some of the leading media companies in the UK. We did a live shave off of Tim Lovejoy’s beard on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, one of our barbers had a part shaving Mr Selfridge on the ITV show when an actor couldn’t quite manage the bare blade shave required and the BBC have filmed numerous shows and interviews in our salons whilst the presenter enjoys a luxury wet shave.

We really seem to be the barber of choice for these companies.

And it’s not only filmed media, it’s the printed media too where Pall Mall Barbers are featured – we’ve been written about in Esquire, The Independent, The Telegraph, Men’s Health and even the New York Times, to name just a few. All features that were independently written by journalists and weren’t paid for articles.

Some of the media companies where we’ve been featured:

Best Barber in London

So the industry, our peers and the media seem to think we’re pretty good but really without customers there wouldn’t be a Pall Mall Barbers. Having recently opened our third barber shop in London, and a fourth on the way, our expansion has been bought about by demand. As we get busier and busier and word seems to spread, we’re looking to open more barber shops to meet our growing numbers of customers.

So, the best barber in London? We think we might just be.  To see what all the fuss is about, why not book an appointment and try us out for yourself? We offer the full range of men’s hairdressing, shaving services and products and you can book online.

Gents Hairdressers in London

Gents hairdressers in London

Are you looking for a gents hairdressers in London? Perhaps you’re new to the city, moved jobs to a different area or just had a nightmare experience at your usual barbers?

It can be quite a daunting task.  We understand that.  But how do you go about finding a good gents hairdressers that won’t rip you off or make a real hash of your hair? We can be a bit precious about our crowning glories, us men, so it’s worth taking some advice and ensuring you find the right gents hairdressers for you – one that not only makes your hair look good, but where you feel comfortable and welcomed.

If you’re new to an area, why not just have a stroll around it one lunchtime?  Gents hairdressers in London are not always located on the busiest streets, so have a wander and see what you find. Note the name of some places you see and then go online.  Check out their website, see what people are saying on social media about them and read online reviews.  If you’re active on social media, you could just pose a question out to your network. One of the great uses of Twitter or Facebook is to get recommendations from people you trust, whether that’s for a plumber, a restaurant or a gents hairdressers in London.

Most good gents hairdressers should have a chat to you before they start to cut your hair.  They’ll have a a look at your hair and will advise whether the style you want will actually work and give you tips on the products to use to get the look you want.  If you don’t feel comfortable at that stage with the person who’s going to cut your hair, make your excuses and leave! Seriously. Might be a bit awkward, but if you’re feeling uneasy at the very beginning, imagine how you feel when you’ve not the got the haircut you want.  Anyway, you never have to see them again!

This advice applies whether your looking for a gents hairdressers in London or elsewhere, but if you are in London and near any of the Pall Mall Barbers 3 central London barber shops, you should come and try us.  But take our own advice first – see what people are saying about us on social media.  We’re very active on twitter and facebook.  You can check out the rest of our website and see our barbers and mens hairdressers before you come in. And on top of all that we’ve got many, many endorsements in some of the most respected mens media in the UK including Esquire and GQ.  With some of the best barbers in the business, we’ve even been demonstrating our mens hairdressing skills on Sunday Brunch, the Politics Show and Mr Selfridge.

Maybe you should be booking an appointment and seeing what all the fuss is about with some of the best gents hairdressing in London.

Thinning Hair

Thinning hair can really affect a man's confidence and as a result, we may stay in denial trying all sorts of tricks to cover it up. But as Dan Davies, the General Manager of Pall Mall Barbers would advise, it's far better to work with it, getting the right cut and using the right products, rather than trying to disguise it.

Dan's expert opinion on thinning hair has been quoted on Fashionbeans.com, the complete fashion, style, fitness and grooming guide for the modern gent. With their team of industry experts, Fashionbeans.com provide the everyday male with the latest advice, inspiration and guides to looking their best daily and has over 1 million readers a month.

If you want to read what Dan has to say on thinning hair, click through to the 2015 Male Grooming Manifesto and then scroll down to May's entry.

First of all, Dan suggests getting it cut rather than trying to grow the thinning hair and then using a matt hair styling product like Pall Mall Barbers Pliable Clay. This has been developed, tried and tested by our professional barbers at our barber shops in London and will give definition to shorter styles of mens hair. Pliable Clay is great for creating styles that can be reworked during the day too, especially if you're going out after work or have a really busy day ahead. It comes in 2 sizes and can be bought online or in any of our Central London barber shops.

If you want to try some Pliable Clay and are not quite sure how to use it, we've got a great video of Dan explaining how much to use and exactly how to apply it. Check out the Pall Mall Barbers youtube channel and watch the video.

And remember, if you're starting to notice thinning hair, book in for a good haircut at Pall Mall Barbers, get their advice on the right products to use and how to style your hair - you'll look and feel much better.

Mens Hair Styling Products

There are so many hair styling products for men on the market, how do you know which one to use?

There are so many mens hair styling products, how do you know which one to use?

The best way, is to ask an expect. Like one of the barbers at our very own Pall Mall Barbers shops in Central London.  With their collective experience of cutting and styling men’s hair, they’ll know exactly which of their mens hair styling products to use to get the look that you want.

One thing we often find, is that men like to stick to what they know.  Whether that’s the hairstyle they’ve sported for years, or the products they’ve been using.  Have a chat to your barber next time you’re in and you’ll be surprised to learn that you could get a better result or finish to your hair, with something other than the hair styling product you’ve relied on for so long.

Our range of mens hair styling products has been developed over many years using the finest ingredients – ones that really work, and also smell great. And we’ve tried and tested them with the people that matter – our customers, to make sure that they definitely do what they say on the tin.

Whether you want a smooth slicked back look, like that of those Mad Men Don Draper and Peter Campbell, or maybe you prefer a more rugged, casual and messy style like Prince Harry likes to sport, then we’ll have just the right hair styling products for you.

Your barber will advise you and show how to use the product properly – we always suggest that you use a little bit first, warm it between your hands and then apply it. We’ve even created a load of videos to give you advice  on how to use them if you can’t call into our barber shops. Why not head over to the Pall Mall Barbers YouTube Channel and have a look.

Check out the full range of mens hair styling products, watch a few of the videos and then go ahead and order them online too.  What could be easier?

Shampoo for Men

Is shampoo for men really better than using just any old shampoo?

In our opinion, we would say yes, definitely.

Pall Mall Barbers have been around a very long time - since 1896 in fact! So we have loads of experience in cutting men's hair and which products to use, and that includes shampoo for men - that means we really know what we're talking about.

We've even developed our own shampoo for men to apply all that knowledge and experience to produce a great product using the best ingredients to give men's hair the best treatment and to get it in the most amazing condition possible,

Using a shampoo for men that has been designed specifically for the needs to men is really the best type of shampoo to use.  Men's hair is different to womens, so a shampoo for men will make a difference to your hair.  Even more so if you use a shampoo that is then tailored to your particular hair type - like dry or oil..

At Pall Mall Barbers, we have developed two types of shampoo for men - one with Argan Oil and one with Tea Tree Oil.  But which is best for you? The Argan Oil one that is great for drier hair and one with Tea Tree Oil that is more suited to guys with a slightly greasier scalp or hair.

Pall Mall Barbers Argan Oil shampoo for men is a luxurious and powerful Argan enriched conditioner for vitality and lustre. This shampoo for men is recommended to be used on a daily basis and it was designed especially to improve shine and strength of the hair.

The main ingredient is Argan Oil that is rich in Vitamin E and comes from a natural plant oil produced from the kernels of the Argan tree that is endemic to Morocco. T

With Pall Mall Barbers Luxury Tea Tree shampoo for men you can benefit from the soothing properties of tea tree and eucalyptus oils. Ideal for itchy and flaking scalps, but also suitable for all hair types.

Both shampoo for men come in 250ml pump dispensers and are available online on Pall Mall Barbers men's shampoo and conditioners  page or in any of our Central London barbers shops.

MPs Hair - How Much Do They Spend?

Politics and Haircuts. What a combination!

A while ago there was a big hoo-haa about MPs hair and how much they paid for their haircuts.

Let's be honest, MPs are not really known for their trend setting, stylish appearances so their hair styles are never going to be at the forefront of fashion. They're more of the low maintenance, easy to keep tidy types with hairstyles that won't look too embarrassing when there's a big gust of wind or they're snapped unexpectedly.

But this recent furore about MPs hair was triggered by David Cameron's barber being made an MBE.  As a result, The Independent newspaper decided to run an article and do some research into MPs hair and how much they paid for their haircuts. Naturally, when any media outlet wants an expert's opinion on men's hair or any other barbering service, they turn to Pall Mall Barbers.

So Daniel Davies, our General Manager, was contacted for his expertise and knowledge, and shared his wisdom. They wrote up a really favourable description of our traditional  barbers shop - if you want to read the full article, it's on The Independent website.

So if you want your hair cut by the best barbers in London, come along to Pall Mall Barbers.  There are now 3 barbers shops in Central London - Trafalgar Square, Fitzrovia and Westminster.  You can book an appointment on line - we don't just cut MPs hair!

Boris Johnson Hairstyle - Get the look of the Mayor of London

Boris Johnson may not be known for his well groomed, dapper appearance but his mop has been the subject of much discussion in the past. It's been wondered whether he cuts it himself and whether he actually likes it looking a mess!

At Pall Mall Barbers, we've been lucky enough to cut the Mayor's hair once and got the distinct impression that Boris Johnson knows what he wants and likes a relaxed style, even though discussion of his hair cut took second place to the cricket match playing on Sky Sports at the time!

Boris was a true gentleman and very down to earth, and we've since learnt that he now uses an inexpensive barber closer to City Hall, which comes as no surprise to us.

His tousled messy signature look sets Boris Johnson apart from almost every other politician, and we believe is probably a conscious decision reflecting his slightly rebellious streak.  It’s this attitude that has brought him huge respect and success.

To start this Get the Look, you need to ask your barber to leave two inches length on top and let them know you wish to keep the side parting. The length around the ears is just touching the top of the ears instead of being cut clear of it which doesn’t look so freshly cut and keeps it looking soft, natural. The sides are not tapered in but rather kept straight. Boris’s hair is very soft in texture which doesn’t require too much point cutting, but some is needed to get rid of any lines and clumps in the layers. Normal to thick hair will need more point cutting to reduce weight and thickness.

To style the hair use a small round brush when drying to push the hair over to the side at the front and back off the face. This will give you some lift at the front also. When dry, apply some of Pall Mall Barbers very own Pliable Clay to your fingertips for a few seconds to warm and soften the product and make it more pliable. Rake your fingers through the length on top of your hair first to spate layers and then to lift the hair at the front. Then with the remainder of product on your fingertips apply to sides rubbing back and forth to add movement in true Boris Johnson fashion!

Here's a Pliable Clay video shot in our Fitzrovia barber shop with Dan demonstrating exactly how to apply Pliable Clay and style your hair with it, and if you want to buy some, call into our Central London barbers shops or get it online.

Ryan Gosling Hairstyle - How to Get the Look

Ryan Gosling has had various hairstyles - from cropped to floppy to bleached blond.  Somehow, he always manages to carry it off.

So here are Pall Mall Barbers' tips on how to replicate this particular Ryan Gosling Hairstyle.  Follow our advice to style your hair into the really popular and classic style of actor  Ryan Gosling - star of hit films Drive, Stupid Crazy Love and Gangster Squad.

This haircut is ideal for anyone with a cowlick at the front of their hair.

One of the main advantages of this haircut is that you can look smart for work by brushing your hair through with a small round brush that has Pall Mall Barbers styling spray on it, or you can go for a more casual look as shown on the picture above by applying a small amount of Pall Mall Barbers Flexible Shine through the mid lengths and ends when blow dried.

To achieve this look visit Pall Mall Barbers and book a wash and cut or restyle depending on your length of hair.  You can phone us or book online

Have your hair scissor cut on the back and sides; this gives a softer finish than the clippers. Then leave the fringe (bang) slightly longer and have an even scissor cut throughout the top section of the hair. The haircut will then be connected and lined out. Depending on your hairline it may be beneficial to have some clipper over comb around the nape of the neck. We've got a great video explaining this for you, so check out the Ryan Gosling hairstyle here.

We recommend Pall Mall Barbers Flexible Shine for the Ryan Gosling hairstyle, which is available from our London barbers.

How to find a good barber in London

Are you looking for a good barber in London? Where do you start? We know there are loads of barber shops in London, but how do you know which ones a good barber shop and which one you should really avoid?

Without being biased (much..)  because we know we’re great!  Here’s our advice on choosing a good barber in London:

Ask around:
Ask someone who’s opinion (and hair) you think is good. Maybe someone you work with, or the guy who serves your morning coffee on the way into work who always seems to have great hair. You may feel a bit embarrassed if it’s a stranger, but to him it’ll be a huge compliment.  Just say you’re looking for a good barber and need a recommendation. Easy!  Twitter is a great source for recommendations, so why not pose a question out to your followers?

Look Online:
Once you’ve got the name of a barber shop in London – maybe from a recommendation, walking past it every day or you’ve picked up a leaflet or promotional voucher somewhere, see what people are saying on line.   Google the barber shop name and if they’ve got lots of happy customers, you’ll see recommendations from all sources – google, twitter, bloggers, social media. You may get the odd one from someone who doesn’t seem as delighted as others, but that’s natural… and human nature to moan, but if the vast majority are saying good things, then they’ve certainly got a good reputation.

Ask for a Barber by Name:
If it’s your first visit to a new barber, then phone up and explain what you want, and ask who the best person would be to do that for you. Whilst all barbers should be skilled and experienced, some specialist in certain areas or styles to it’s worth asking.

So if you’ve done all that and tried somewhere other than Pall Mall Barbers (no, really?)  and you’re not happy, then you know know where to come next time!

Pall Mall Barbers of course, in our opinion (and our customers’) the best barber shops in London.

See details of all our barbers with their photos on our Stylists page showing good barbers in London.

David Beckham's Hairstyle - Style Tips from Pall Mall Barbers

David Beckham's hairstyle always seems to be changing and over the years he's certainly entertained some weird and wonderful hairstyles, but at Pall Mall Barbers  in London,we particularly liked his retro 50’s look.

Whatever style he rocks, he always looks good and he's the men's style icon that we get asked most for by our customers - who want to know the best men's haircut and men's hair styling products to use. So we've put together this Get the Look of David Beckham's hairstyle just for you.

Be prepared though, looking this good does take some maintenance even for David Beckham - you'll need to blow dry and style your hair, but it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes once you get the hang of it.

We'd suggest booking in for a restyle at one of our barbers shops in London for your first appointment and then follow up with a cut and wash every 3 to 4 weeks.  You can book an appointment online here or just phone up one of our barbers shop, here are their locations.

To get this particular David Beckham's hairstyle, your Pall Mall Barber will expertly section your hair off, the clippering then takes place. This is done evenly all the way round. The top of the hair is then cut, starting longer at the fringe (bang) area. Going slightly shorter towards the crown area.

Blowdrying is essential to this hair style and a small round brush would need to be used to gain volume and smooth out the hair this should be done with a small amount of Pall Mall Barbers’ Light Dress Cream being applied when damp and before drying. Finally to finish your David Beckham look, when the hair is dry for a natural look use Pall Mall Barbers Pliable Clay to give it a little more hold.

You can  buy both products online, on the mens hair styling products page.

There are so many hair styling products for men on the market, how do you know which one to use?

The best way, is to ask an expect. Like one of the barbers at our very own Pall Mall Barbers shops in Central London.  With their collective experience of cutting and styling men’s hair, they’ll know exactly which hair styling product to use to get the look that you want.

Our range of hair styling products for men has been developed over many years using the finest ingredients – ones that really work, and also smell great.

Get the Look - Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman always comes across as very professional and confident, but he's also a bit edgy.  We like to think of him as stylishly cool.

So if you want to Get the Look of the star of Les Miserables, X Men and Wolverine, here is our advice on how to get your hair cut, how to style it and which products to use.

Book an appointment at a men's barbers and ask him to scissor cut the back and sides of your hair  to around an inch in length, whilst leaving the hair resting on the top of the ears. We'd actually recommend taking along a phone of Hugh Jackman with you, just in case to show your barber exactly the type of look you want to achieve. You can book an appointment at our London barber shops online.

With the top of the hair, your barber should take a section in the middle and cut this to around 2.5”.  This will be used as a guide to then connect the remaining hair to this. Ensure the hair is cut neutrally and not left longer on any one side.

To finish this style off, we would recommend blow drying it using a small round brush and push from left to right. This will get some volume into the roots.  Once the hair is dry, point cut into the hair. This adds texture and allows the styling product to flow through the hair. Point cutting should always be done when the hair is fully dry so that you can see where the texture needs to be added.

To finish your Hugh Jackman look, we'd recommend a great product like Pall Mall Barbers Texture Enhancer.  Use a small amount, warm it through your hands and then just run your fingers through your hair, topping off this look by pushing your hair back slightly when the hair is dry. This gives a stylish yet care free look. If you want to buy some of this product, call into our London barber shops or get it online along with a range of other men's hair styling products.

We've got a great short video, where Dan from Pall Mall Barbers is demonstrating exactly how to use this product.  Hugh Jackman hair styling video
